Chennai: Tamil Nadu has restored permission for early morning movie screenings, allowing cinema halls to conduct up to six shows daily during the first week of a new film’s release.
The government, led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, has permitted screenings between 6am and 2.30am the following day. The provision will also apply during festivals, public holidays and weekends.
Early morning shows were discontinued following a stampede during a screening of Thunivu in 2023. Film industry associations had sought the restoration of six daily shows.

Producer G Dhananjayan said a request was submitted to Minister Rajmohan on October 27. He thanked Vijay for responding promptly to the industry’s demand.
The decision is expected to benefit upcoming releases, including Suriya-starrer Seen and Mookuthi Amman 2, scheduled to hit theatres on November 6.
